Overview

Edgewater is seeking a Inside/Outside Plant Technician to support cable infrastructure of a major national laboratory.

 

The successful candidate will provide building-to-building cabling (outside plant) and internal-building cabling (inside Plant) support for both a copper and fiber infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Review incoming IT Cabling requests and resolve cable outages
  • Perform troubleshooting on both copper and fiber optic cable and resolve all intermittent issues in systems.
  • Perform tests and validate all cooper and fiber installations
  • Perform accurate cable termination for all patch panels and OSP splice cases
  • Administer telecommunication cabling architecture for all buildings Outside Plant (OSP) and cable maintenance hole systems and distribution frames
  • Perform cable pulls
  • Perform tests and certify fiber optic and OSP cabling system
  • Locates of buried cabling

Qualifications

 

  • Associate degree and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or
    • In lieu of a degree, 6 years of directly related experience.
  • Must be US Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of RUS (Rural Utility Service) standards related to utility locating and telecommunications construction.
  • Hands-on experience with OSP (Outside Plant) copper splicing, terminations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in fiber optic fusion splicing, including termination, testing, and documentation of fiber networks.
  • Strong understanding of cable locating procedures, including use of locating equipment and adherence to safety standards.
  • Ability to distinguish wire and cable color codes and cable counts with accuracy and consistency.
  • Working knowledge of inter‑ and intra‑building telecommunications cabling standards.
  • Operational understanding of OSP structured pathways, including conduit, duct systems, handholes, and other infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with PC-based applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute effectively within a team environment.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as needed for field or equipment-related tasks.
