Overview

Position Summary

This position will support the US Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (DOE OSTI) in Oak Ridge, TN. This is a part-time internship requiring 10-15 hours per week over a 3-month period.

Responsibilities

Position-Specific Duties

  • Assists with day-to-day customer support and troubleshooting activities under the guidance of helpdesk staff.
  • Learns to operate and maintain system applications on desktop computers.
  • Supports the tracking and organization of hardware and software inventories.
  • Helps install, configure, and maintain devices in alignment with contract requirements.
  • Aids in updating and maintaining system documentation.
  • Participates in planning and tracking support-related project timelines and short-term goals.
  • Provides basic technical assistance and training to users, with supervision, in accordance with project requirements and quality control plans.
  • Contributes ideas for future desktop requirements and system enhancements.
  • Performs routine system administrative tasks such as user account setup, file transfers, and basic troubleshooting, with mentorship from senior staff.

Qualifications

Education, Training, Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or possessing an equivalent foundational background
  • No prior professional experience required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (Preferred, not required)

  • Basic understanding of network technologies, including Internet protocols and applications, is beneficial
  • Familiarity with client/server applications and procedures is beneficial
  • Familiarity with system documentation standards and procedures is beneficial
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
  • Proactive, results-oriented, and adaptable
  • Capable of performing effectively under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate positively with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to contribute effectively as part of a diverse team
  • Aptitude for explaining technical information in an accessible manner
  • Familiarity with remote communications operations and various protocols is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

 

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to sit for long periods.
  • Ability to view computer monitors for long periods.

 

Ability to provide proof of US Citizenship on your first day of employment to obtain a DOE HSPD-12 Badge in accordance with the terms of the contract. Department of Energy OSTI's policy direction requires all employees employed on this contract to be citizens of the United States.
