Overview

Edgewater Federal Solutions is seeking a Technical Editor to support the IT program at a major national laboratory. We are looking for an exceptional technical editor to join our Technical Editing and Communications group, which provides multidisciplinary, full-service communications support for organizations and programs at the lab.

 

In this role, you will be embedded within a specific Laboratory organization to provide technical editing services to subject matter experts, managers, and leaders. The successful candidate will be extremely detail-oriented, with initiative and the ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and tight turnaround times.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for a wide variety of internal and external communications activities, strategic and tactical, conceptual and deliverable. Attains measurable results and improves continuously.
  • You will edit existing technical material and assist in document preparation.
  • Evaluate technical documents to determine the needed level and depth of edit based on multiple factors, including length, complexity, structure, and deadline.
  • Work on multiple, sometimes conflicting, deliverables and deadlines in a high-pressure work environment where priorities frequently shift.
  • Work effectively within a team and with a variety of technical personnel and managers.
  • Perform a variety of levels of edit, ranging from basic copy to substantive editing, on highly specialized technical documents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or business and a minimum five years of related experience
  • In lieu of a degree, additional relevant experience may be applicable.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required per contract to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q clearance.
  • An experienced professional with a full understanding of specialized area plus working knowledge of related fields. Adept at solving a range of complex problems. Contributes to the development of organization's goals and objectives. Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met. Demonstrates good judgment. Determines approach to solutions, plans and schedules activities to accomplish objectives. Must be receptive to coaching, education, and constructive criticism. Must learn to provide effective feedback to others, upward and downward.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar and punctuation, as well as extensive experience in technical editing and writing.

  • Must also have the ability to learn and comprehend new technical concepts and terminology.

  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, problem solving, and customer service and interpersonal skills.

  • Must have ability to maintain professional and courteous interactions with team members, technical personnel both inside and outside the assigned organization, and a range of managers internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Possess medium to advanced proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. A solid understanding of Word styles and templates and PowerPoint-specific formatting is also required.

Desired:

  • Experience working with highly technical documents and procedures is a plus.

  • Lab-specific experience or experience working in a large, complex institution or company is desirable. Experience working on large, multi-agency technical programs is also desirable

  • Experience in handling sensitive and classified documents and communications would be advantageous.
